Intersectional Feminist Archives: Ethics Into Practice, Radical Archives conference

This is what I'll be doing this weekend instead of cataloging zines. Digital Archivist Martha Tenney and I are presenting at the Radical Archives conference at NYU on 4/11/14 at 11:05am.

Barnard Zine Library: Privileging Creators

Barnard Zine Library policies and procedures are intended to be responsive to and reflective of zine community ethos. Honoring a zine maker's request to remove her zine from one's collection can provoke ethical fisticuffs in a zine librarian/librarian zinester's heart. To whom is the feminist archivist of living authors' materials more responsible, the authors themselves or researchers from the future? And to distant researchers? If we want the voices represented in the Barnard Zine Library--default female, as often as not queer, often young, usually radical, women of color emphasized, etc.--to be part of the archival narrative of the late 20th/early 21st century is it a mistake to privilege the zines' creators wishes? As Kate Eichhorn posits in The Archival Turn in Feminism can "…item-level cataloging of marginal materials holds more potential for subversion than simply digitizing the same materials." even for remote users of our collection? This paper will explore how, influenced by our location in an institution peopled by faculty and scholars that integrate intersectional feminisms into their lives and work, it is ultimately reasonable to have a creator-centric philosophy inform our decision-making.

Last week my cataloging day was preempted by Passover. I went to Milwaukee for an anarqueer veg*n seder hosted by Milo & Chris of QZAP (the Queer Zine Archive Project). I hope you weren't too devasted by a lack of zines added to the collection. Building zine librarian community is an important part of my job, and has nothing to do with the fact that Milo is a really good cook.

Brooklyn Zine Fest panel coordinator and Barnard alum Jordan Alam is facilitating the panel topics this weekend at Brooklyn Zine Fest!

Brooklyn Zine Fest panel coordinator and Barnard alum Jordan Alam of The Cowation is facilitating the panel topics at Brooklyn Zine Fest. The panel talks will be held in Brooklyn Historical Society’s Othmer Library.

    PANEL TALKS:

Queer & Trans* Zinesters (Saturday 4/26 at 4:30pm)

For some of us, the first time we connected with queer people was through zines. How do queer zinesters — especially queer people of color — tell their stories? How do zines build queer community (or not)? Listen to these panelists speak on how queer and trans* identities appear (or don’t appear) in their zines and how zine culture figures into the rest of their lives.

Collecting Zines (Libraries, Archives, & Collectives) (Sunday 4/27 at 1pm)

Zines are often thought of as impermanent; most have a very limited distribution and are not expected to be distributed forever. However, there are many large and growing zine libraries, archives, and public collections that are making zines more permanent and lengthening their “shelf life.” On this panel, we will be discussing the ethics of zine collecting and how collectors go about their work.

    Anonymity (Sunday 4/27 at 3pm)

What are the benefits/drawbacks of being a “public zinester”? Some zinesters find that the material they put out might change their relationships with other people if it was put under their real name; some just find it to be part of “zine culture” to be mysterious. Do you put your real name on your zine? Come find out what our panelists have to say about and share your own experiences with anonymity.
