Call for Submissions: Experience-Based Comics for a Graphic Novel about Abortion Care
The national organization Advocates for Youth and editors of Not Your Mother’s Meatloaf: A Sex Education Comic Book are teaming up to put together a collection of comics about firsthand experience with abortion.
We are seeking illustrators/comic book artists to write their own abortion stories in short graphic novel format. We’d like them to be up to five pages, color or black and white spreads. They should tell the writer’s personal experience with abortion. The writers can be any gender, and we can take the term “experience” somewhat generally – they can be a provider, a clinic escort, someone who accompanied someone when they got the procedure. The works should NOT be just about pro-choice feelings or opinions, though. The writer needs to have had direct experience with abortion care.
If the artist is not typically a comic book writer, we can also accept single art pieces that represent a person's experience (as opposed to a series of comic panels).
Once acquired, the newly illustrated stories would:
1) Be added to the Advocates for Youth website, http://www.advocatesforyouth.
2) Be used as part of Advocates’ “week of artivism” for campus groups – colleges would display the spreads in a common area to spark discussion and raise awareness.
3) Be published in a graphic novel format.
